Alcazaba Tour

Explore one of the best preserved Arab fortresses in Spain

Duration: 1 hour

This Arab citadel of the 11th century is considered to be the best and most important muslim military fortress ever built in Spain and should be included in the Top 10 Walking Tours in Malaga. You can’t find it in many Free-tours nor other major Private-Tours offered in Malaga. The Alcazaba together with the Castle of Gibralfaro (14th Century) have been the strongest and most difficult bastions to be defeated by the christians during their several attempts to take over Malaga.
It was almost impossible to reconquer the entire city without thinking of an another intelligent strategy rather than just attacking the city in a brute and straight way.

The different tactics applied by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella to overcome these obstacles were:

  • blocking the port

  • burning their fields

  • sieging the city for about 3 month

In this way they stifled the city and sunk the morale of the soldiers.

Malaga surrendered without conditions on the 18th of August, 1487 and most of the prisoners were sold as slaves to North Africa and Middle East.

Still interest in exploring the history of an unknown military tactic?
